EdTech & LMS

Selling to a sector that buys by season, not by month

Buying decisions in education track the academic year and the annual budget. A campaign launched at the wrong time gets judged a failure when the only problem was timing.

  • Intensifying campaigns before budget and enrolment windows
  • Separating institutional buyers from corporate L&D buyers
  • No unsupported employment or learning-outcome promises
Context

Two different markets under one label

What is labelled “EdTech” is really two markets that resemble each other very little. The first is educational institutions: universities, schools and education groups, whose decisions track the academic year and accreditation. The second is companies buying learning systems to train their staff, whose decisions track the HR budget and development goals.

A message that works with one fails with the other. A university asks about integration with the student information system and about accreditation; a company asks about completion reporting and how it links to performance reviews.

The most expensive mistake is ignoring seasonality. Reaching a university mid-term is entirely different from reaching it during next-year planning. We build the campaign calendar around those windows rather than spreading it evenly across the months.

The signals we track in this sector

The signal is the reason to call. These specific events are what we look for in this sector before any outreach.

  • Announcements of new academic programmes or campus expansion
  • Planning periods for the coming academic year and budget approval
  • Hiring learning and development roles inside larger companies
  • Government or sector training initiatives that open new budgets
  • A change in academic affairs or HR leadership
  • An existing learning system contract approaching its end, the best outreach window
Who makes the decision

Who makes the decision

The decision in this sector is not made by one person. These are the roles we identify at each account, and what each of them actually cares about.

RoleWhat they care about
Dean / Academic Affairs Educational impact, accreditation, and faculty acceptance
Institutional IT Director Integration with existing systems and student data protection
L&D Manager Completion rates and how they link to performance reviews
HR Director Cost per employee and the effect on retention

What a campaign in this sector involves

Scheduling around decision windows

Concentrating outreach before planning and budget periods, easing off when the institution is busy.

Separating the two tracks

One track for educational institutions and one for corporate learning, with different messaging and qualification questions.

Reaching committees, not individuals

Education decisions are usually collective, so we identify the relevant committee and build relationships with more than one member.

Discipline on claims

We do not promise learning outcomes or employment opportunities unless the programme genuinely and legally supports it.

Qualification notes specific to this sector

The general qualification criteria are customised per sector. These are the differences we apply here.

  • We verify where the account sits in the budget cycle, because genuine interest outside the budget window means a deferral rather than a deal.
  • We clearly separate educational institutions from companies buying training, and never mix the qualification rules.
  • We use no claim about learning outcomes or employment rates without documented evidence from the client.
  • An approved training budget is a far stronger signal than company size or student numbers.
FAQ

Questions about this sector

When is the best time to launch a campaign?

It depends on the track. For educational institutions, the periods before academic-year planning are best. For corporate learning, the period before the HR budget is approved. We identify the window with you before setting a launch date.

Do you reach public universities?

We reach both public and private institutions, with one important difference: the public sector usually has a formal procurement route that a meeting does not bypass. There the meeting’s purpose is building awareness ahead of a tender, and we set that expectation from the start.

Can you target individuals and students?

No. Our work is entirely B2B: institutions and companies, not individuals. Selling to individual consumers needs an entirely different model that we do not provide.
